Bryophyte assembly rules across scales

چکیده
Understanding how species assemble into communities is a central issue in community ecology. So far, most studies have focused on the assembly mechanisms of vascular plant communities, while role deterministic (environmental filtering and biotic interactions) stochastic (e.g. dispersal limitation) processes structuring bryophyte assemblages remains poorly understood. To evaluate different shape mountain streams, we examined functional trait patterns across spatial scales along environmental gradients. do so, sampled 754 microhabitat plots (0.25 m2) nested within 165 sites (100-m long stream segments) 13 sub-basins, located northwest central-west Portugal. At each scale, observed diversity indices (Functional Richness Rao's quadratic entropy) were compared to random expectations derived from null models, followed by analysis changes gradients fitting series generalized additive mixed models. local (site plot), coexisting tended be more functionally similar than expected, suggesting prevalence effects. In contrast, no significant deviations detected at broadest scale (sub-basin), indicating processes. We found contrasting gradients: prevailed stressful environments, competitive interactions important favourable conditions. Synthesis. Our results highlight fine scales, emphasizing importance measuring conditions same where take place. line with stress-dominance hypothesis, relative increased abiotic stress. Thus, analysing may contribute better understanding underlying assembly.

متن کاملBrain structure and dynamics across scales: in search of rules.
Louis Henry Sullivan, the father of skyscrapers, famously stated 'Form ever follows function'. In this short review, we will focus on the relationship between form (structure) and function (dynamics) in the brain. We summarize recent advances on the quantification of directed- and weighted-mesoscopic connectivity of mammalian cortex, the exponential distance rule for mesoscopic and microscopic ...
متن کاملParticle Integration across Scales Using Self-Assembly and Transfer
Bulk synthesis is the most efficient way to produce such particles. However, in general the products are disordered, whereas devices usually require ordered arrangements. Self-assembly processes can order large numbers of particles in parallel on surfaces, but require specific chemistry and patterned substrates, both of which often conflict with other fabrication requirements. In addition to pa...
متن کاملEngineered Solder-Directed Self-Assembly Across Length Scales
We report on recent progress in the directed self-assembly of discrete inorganic semiconductor device components. Different from prior research, the goal is to enable the integration of increasingly small dies while supporting unique-angle orientation and contact pad registration. The process is based on the reduction of surface free energy between liquid solder coated areas on the substrate an...
